Gold-Medal Teacher

An Olympian rolled into town to give aspiring athletes tips on what it takes to be a champion.
Horseman Mark Watring, who participated in the Los Angeles and Athens Olympics and won a gold medal in individual jumping at the 2003 Pan American games, came here to host a jumping clinic at the Glenwood Equestrian Center in Scotts Valley.
Dodging raindrops during the lesson were students like EMILY WALKER, an Aptos fourth-grader; MARTINA MIDDIONE,a Scotts Valley High freshman; NICOLE ROEMER, president of the UCSC Equestrian Team; and DOROTHY WISE, owner of Glenwood Equestrian Center.
Mark also worked with each student to improve their jumping skills - a class, said Emily's mom, Linda Walker, that exceeded her expectations.
