Local Equestrian Students Jump for Joy

The Glenwood Equestrian Center in Scotts Valley held its first Jumper Schooling Show on Saturday, March 6.
The scene was festive, with brightly colored jumps, flowers, and families and friends cheering on the many riders competing from low cross-rails to the Mini-Prix with jumps 3’3” high.
Martina Middione, an eighth grader at Scotts Valley Middle School, won the cross-rail and 2’3” classes. She has been riding for three years and just recently celebrated her one-year anniversary with her horse, Magic.
Martina enjoys riding because it’s an after-school sport that involves animals, though “it’s harder than it looks.” Still, she’s learned patience and to never give up. “Now, when I get frustrated, I know to work on it another day.”
Another rider, Melissa Pasa, is a senior at San Lorenzo Valley High. She has been riding for ten years and loves jumping. Her goal is to ride well enough to jump even higher – as high as five feet!
For Melissa, riding has taught her how to communicate without words, which, she says, “helps in all my relationships.” Studying with jumper trainer Juan Ayora, she has also learned “the difference between being a passenger and a rider.”
Other local students who competed include Kim Landsman, who also plays basketball for Scotts Valley High School, and several UCSC equestrians, including Ashley Suchowiejko, Nicole Roemer, Sarah Ramberg, and Kate Milewski.
The Glenwood Equestrian Center will be hosting another Jumper Schooling Show on Saturday March 27, starting at 10 a.m. The public is invited to come and watch. Riders from other barns are also welcome to compete.
For registration information, call 438-8432 or check the website, www.glenwoodequestriancenter.com.
