Mikolka demonstrating the vibration technique to Dorothy on Rascal.
Karl Mikolka Dressage Clinic at Pony Tracks Ranch - April 27-29, 2006
Dorothy had the privilege to ride with Karl Mikolka,
former Chief Rider of the Spanish Riding School and Olympic Coach, for three days. During
that time, she worked on everything from learning the proper amount of flexion required to
beginning attempts at the piaffe.
Day One, she worked on riding accurate geometry, be it the centerline or a circle; proper
shoulder-in; balancing the horse; and her first attempt doing the piaffe.
Day Two, Karl long-lined Dorothy and Rascal to demonstrate rein pressure. She also learned about
the symmetry of dressage; tools to soften and round the horse during trot and canter; and how to
affect a horse's movement by knowing which foot is on the ground during each phase of the three gaits.
Day Three, Dorothy was tested on the accuracy of her circles; wore out her legs doing shoulder-in;
activated the hind end to get correct (not too expressive) lead changes across the diagonal and in a serpentine;
and how to get the horse to do more work than the rider(!)
It was a wonderufl, exciting and exhausting learning experience from a true master of dressage. Wow!

then he gradually lessened his influence as Dorothy rode more effectively.
